1 out of 5 stars Duller than a Dull Thing   August 26, 2010
Paul Smith
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

This is my opinion - others have very different ones!

I read all 3 Girl novels this Spring and I think I deserve a medal for it.

It is obvious that the death of the author has been allowed to interfere with the editing of all 3 novels - all are too long, overly descriptive of mundane matters, too long, childishly written, too long, predictable and, did I mention it? Too Long. Underneath all the hype are 2 ok thrillers and this dreadful finale which bores beyond belief and was a toil to read. What was needed was a very good editor to get involved and to cut out at least half of each novel to at least inject a little pace and structure and to take out the ridiculous and irritating. The books' hero (the man Mr Larsson would have wanted to be?) is a dreadful bore and extremely irritating - you just know he is going to end up in bed with every woman who is described as attractive. The female lead is, at first, intriguing but, by this book, completely dull and the poor wretch spends most of her time in a hospital bed.

There is a good book or two screaming to get out of these bore-fests and it is a shame that the opportunity was missed for the sake of honouring a dead man's memory.

5 out of 5 stars A Great read   August 23, 2010

A long read but the detail of this story is phenomenal - almost makes you begin to think the whole thing must be a true story. Where did he think up such detail ? So sorry he didnt get to write any more as I have thoroughly enjoyed the trilogy - probably the best books I have read.

Very very good and Stieg Larsson is an excellent author and this is the 3rd book of his triology.

4 out of 5 stars Good ending to the trilogy   August 22, 2010
Janie U (Kings Cliffe, England)
This book picks up from the end of The Girl Who Played With Fire and immediately takes you straight back into the world of Salander and Blomkvist on a night which is going to take a lot of explaining.
I would recommned reading this soon after the second book (which I didn't) as being familiar with the characters makes the book easier to get into. I found it quite difficult initially with the Swedish names and the huge numbers of characters - which I have done with all 3 books. Along with the tremendous level of detail, this is all part of Larsson's style and, once the book got going (and I was comfortable who everyone was) I was drawn into the fast moving plot.
Again, the detail is immense but is used at a level which can be understood by everyone. The use of technical information like this is unusual in mass market novels and gives an unique experience reading these books.
Not surprisingly, many seperate groups are involved with investigating different parts of the plot. I was impressed that the "good guys" all seemed to be happy to exchange information - more like the real world than often is portrayed in novels.
The ending was clever - plenty of opportunity for further books, shame Stieg Larsson died suddenly - although I hear there is an unpublished book around, let's hope so :-) Maybe someone else will pick up the series?
